Eligibility
Graduate and Family Housing residents must be enrolled in at least one class, maintain proper academic progress toward a degree at the University of Florida and be one of the following:
- Graduate, professional or similar student
- Have a spouse and/or dependent children live with you
- At least 21 years old as an undergraduate with Junior class standing
Residents must also be making suitable progress towards an academic degree. Suitable progress is at the sole discretion of appropriate administrative team members in the Graduate and Family Housing central office. However, appropriate academic departments will be consulted as needed.
Residents may request special exemptions from this policy for special situations. These special situations include, but are not limited to:
- Research opportunities
- Internships
- Graduation Extension
Graduation Extension refers to the ability to request to remain in Graduate and Family Housing after graduation. When approval is given, it is usually given for a period of time not to exceed one semester. In any situation where permission is given to remain in Graduate and Family Housing without corresponding academic enrollment, said time off is generally not permitted to be two concurrent semesters or any more than one semester in any 12-month period. As individual situations often vary, interested individuals are invited to contact Sue Hamel in the central office with respect to any questions about this policy. Reminders about the academic eligibility policy are sent to all residents in October, February, and May of each year.
Resident Eligibility
In order to promote and maintain the best possible residential environment and in keeping with specific regulations, there are certain limitations with respect to some of our facilities. These limitations are as follows:
- Primary Occupant - Only a primary occupant (the billed student), a spouse and dependent children are allowed to live in an apartment.
Roommates are only permitted in Tanglewood Village. Please email villages@housing.ufl.edu for more information.
Guests of a short-term duration are always allowed. Guests of a long-term duration require permission. For more information about the Graduate and Family Housing guest policy, please contact Rena Buchan, Assistant Director of Housing. - One-Bedroom Apartments - Children are not permitted to live in one-bedroom apartments. This policy relates to noise concerns and is not in place for any other reason. Exceptions may be granted for situations involving existing residents. This policy also pertains to Tanglewood Efficiency Apartments.
- Maguire Apartments - Due to various Federal Regulations that relate to the use of Maguire Village, Maguire residents are required to have their income evaluated with respect to the rental rate to be charged. More information about this can be found here.
Exceptions
Exceptions to the eligibility requirements must be requested as far in advance as possible by emailing villages@housing.ufl.edu. Not all requests are approved. Here are some common exceptions:
Early Move-In: Prior to enrollment new residents may move in up to one semester prior to attending classes.
Late Move-Out: Graduating students may stay up to a week after graduation. By request, residents may also request to stay up to one semester after graduation.
Semester Off from Classes: This allowance is intended to accommodate research or other academic situations. Residents may request to live in GFH for one semester during each 12 month period without being enrolled in classes. Other situations may be considered.
Between Degrees: Residents may request to live with GFH between degrees for up to one semester. For example, a student may live with GFH for the summer in between completing their master.s degree and starting a doctoral program.
Special Guests: Housing is occasionally available to exchange students, visiting scholars or post-doctoral students. This is unusual and such requests are secondary to student housing requests. Sufficient documentation will be required.
